Vulcan is a Finite Element software designed as a defect-prediction tool for the foundry engineer, in order to correct and/or improve his/her casting process, even before prototype trials are produced.
 
Vulcan helps the foundry engineer to enter a minimum requirement of information, and to  analyse the results in a simple and effective manner, allowing the complete simulation of the following processes:
 
•  Gravity sand casting
•  Gravity die casting
•  Gravity tilt pouring
•  Low pressure die casting
•  High pressure die casting

The software package consists of:
 
• Graphical interface and mesh tools
• Mould filling solver
• Solidification and cooling solver: Thermal and thermo-mechanical(Casting shrinkage).
 
The software runs on a PC (Windows operating system) performing simulations of:
 
•    Cycling: mould regime temperatures
•    Filling evolution: Velocities, temperatures, turbulences, pressure
•    Solidification: Temperature evolution, phase-change, deformation, shrinkage, stresses of both cast and mould
•    Cooling: Temperature evolution of the solidified part, either inside the mould or de-moulding.
•    Mechanical: Loading of the part after manufacturing for studying the residual stress evolution.
 
The interface lets the user define the problem and carry out the analysis as easily as possible.
